What Do Senior Citizens Want?
Most senior citizens want to just spend time with others. It doesn't always have to be with family. But loneliness has to be one of the hardest things for seniors to deal with. However, loneliness ends up being better than losing your independence.
Can a pet help? Yes, I think it is the next best thing. As we get older, it seems we are no longer needed, yet the emotion is still there. I know several older people who say they don't want an animal, until they get one. I think even a bird would be great for someone living alone. Remember years ago, senior's were associated with a bird (Tweety?) on the back porch, or in the kitchen? If you don't have someone to talk to, something can be the next best option. Loss of memory is a primary concern, as we get older. Talking to a pet or interacting with it, can help. You know, "If you don't use it, you'll lose it"? What a great gift, idea! A new buddy!
Good golly Miss Molly I wish you could see, All the love that I have waiting at home for me.
By the Grace of My God As he looks from above I know that real soon I'll be covered with love.
And guess who will be there When I turn the key? Miss Molly, Miss Grace, and Miss Libbie!
With tails all a wagging And knocking me down, I look up and say, "Thank You", for this group that I found.
You ever see those old movies of old men playing chess, shuffle board, or horse shoes? Well, they tried to keep active. We can't sit around feeling sorry for ourselves because "we're not as young as we used to be". There are so many things we can do. Put together some of those old recipes you have, doll them up, and give them to your daughter, granddaughter, or daughter-in-law. My daughter-in-law often calls me to ask about something I've made. What better way to please the pallet of their other half, than to give them something like "Mom used to make"!
You know, just because we're getting older, doesn't mean we can skip the spring cleaning. However, get some boxes together and sort as you go. You'll find that the older we get, the less we need. Senior citizens want less clutter! Next, see if a friend, a family member, a neighbor, or someone you know will help you organize a garage sale. You might be quite surprised what treasures you might have that could bring enough for a little trip or something you've been wanting. Don't, I repeat, don't give it away. Let the one or ones helping you know that your motive for the sale is to monetize from it. I, too, find myself saying, "Oh, just take it!". Not this time. If there is something you want to give to someone, don't put it in the sale, give it to them ahead of time.
Let's have a party! Just because we're senior citizens, doesn't mean we don't enjoy the little things that we used to. Avon, tupperware, Mary Kay, etc. You will find that just planning a party will be fun and jog your memory of past ones you've been to. Have some games at the party and interact with your guests. Have a style show for them that is outrageous and full of good humor. Maybe an "old ladies lingerie" one that will keep everyone in stitches. Can't you just picture this as what senior citizens want? Fun, fun fun!
Join a senior citizens aerobics class. Not only will you meet new friends but you will look forward to your next time to go.The local YMCA or YWCA should offer some of these classes as might some local gyms. Get a buddy to go, too! This might be something senior citizens want.

Start a one day travel club for senior citizens. Ask a few friends to join, and all go on an out-of-town excursion, once a month. Have a designated driver and everyone pitch in $1.00 towards gas. Make it a surprise where you're going but keep family notified. Stop and have lunch, along the way, at a place no one has been before. Have everyone order hors d'oeuvres and then share. That will keep the costs down and give everyone a chance to try something new. Be sure to have a camera with you, I can just see all the laughter that this could bring, a long with the many times you will probably get lost. It happens to me and my friend, all the time. It's usually the best part of the trip! When you have to stop and ask directions, I bet the one giving them must think what a bunch of loons! What do these senior citizens want?
Or maybe you can go together and rent a beach house for a quick get away. There are plenty of vacation homes that are not always being utilized. Click on this one to check some near by rates.
Driving: Two elderly women were out driving in a large car - both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself, 'I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light.' After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red again. Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous at the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they went through. So, she turned to the other woman and said, "Mildred, did you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!" Mildred turned to her and said, "Oh! Am I driving?" Just a bit of humor, there.

Movies! Who doesn't like to go to the movies? Ask your loved ones for movie tickets for your birthday or mothers day. Ask for two so that you and a friend can go, together. Or, ask for a simple DVD player with a sit down instruction tutorial, (by them). Learn how to use it. Then someone can rent you some old or new movies to watch at home and invite a friend. You can have a friend pick up a couple of movies on the way there. I do this often with my friend. And money is not an issue when you can now go to McDonalds and get them at the red box. What's that you ask? The red box is a vending machine at all McDonalds where you can rent a movie for only $1.00! And if you have grand kids, you go to McDonalds! You get a movie for overnight and you don't have to have it back until 9:30 the next night. How cool is that? And yes, they have recent movies. My grandchildren showed this to me. They always seem to know whats new and going on, don't they? Best of all, you can return it to any Red Box, even if you didn't get it at the one close to home. What more could senior citizens want? And now they have put these boxes at Walgreen's, Kroger and other stores to make it convenient no matter where you live.

I want to tell you what I think senior citizens want are more fun web sites. If we're going to be stuck at home, a lot, why not have something fun to do. Senior citizens want answers. Some questions we have might make us feel silly to ask. But if we can be shown some very safe and fun and informational sites, by our loved ones, wow, what a new world to get to know. My friend just bought her first computer and I have been trying to show her some basics on how to use it. She is in awe about it. Senior citizens want to keep up with the latest technology as well as anyone else and what better way than a computer. There just needs to be more web sites, for us.
When it comes to what do seniors citizens want, I don't think we want anything much different than anyone else. We want to continue to live a comfortable life and have the creature comforts that we've always had. And we want everyone around us to quit asking, "Is there anything you need?" and ask, "Is there anything you want?" And don't feel guilty for asking. We got them where they are today! These are some things we senior citizens want!
