Let's Do Some Senior Gardening

To do some senior gardening, or a potted garden, is not so difficult to do. I only say that because I recently did one, myself.

I have reaped the benefits, already. I put a nice roast in the oven a couple of days ago. I browned it first and than cut a few of my new herbs off and tossed them in. I went on about my business, and did some yard work.

OMG (Oh my goodness!) When I went back into the house, it smelled so good, my jaws ached. I pulled the roast out and let it rest. I than cut a little off to taste and to share, and we were so shocked at the wonderful flavors that just melted in our mouths.

It started a few days ago when my daughter-in-law called. She said she was going to look for spring flowers to plant and did I want to go with her. I said sure but I wasn't planning on getting much because I was tired of fighting bugs and bees every summer. I worried that one of my dogs would get stung.

We went to a nursery close by and the flowers were gorgeous! I told her to get me out of there.

But, instead I decided to look around and I noticed all the fresh herb plants that had just arrived. You could smell the aroma of them just floating in the air. They also had a lot of fresh vegetables.

I had an idea. What if I just planted a big pot of herbs and have myself a senior herb garden. I bounced the idea off of her and she thought it was a great idea. My daughter-in-law doesn't have a garden either, but my son built her some above ground flower beds and she grows peppers and a few vegetables in those.

So we picked out what we wanted and went to another building supply store and bought our soil and I got a great deal on a large urn. After doing some research, I learned to never use ground dirt for a potted garden. So I got that part right. I also learned of several ways to make a senior friendly garden or potted one.

A small child's swimming pool makes for great senior gardening. Just be sure to have someone put some drainage holes in it. A warmed up ice pick or screw driver will do the trick.

Use a little stool when tending to your senior garden and remember that weeds didn't grow all at once. That means you don't have to pull them all at once. The idea is to enjoy it!

I have become so exited now about my senior gardening that I find myself looking everywhere about herb gardens. I have also learned that they now have so many new senior friendly tools out there that make it so much easier than it used to be.

Also if you paint your garden tools bright colors, they are easy to find. (Maybe I should do that with my glasses, too !)

Any way, if you miss the days when you used to walk into grandma's house and smell the wonderful aromas of home cooking, you will find it here. Just try a couple of herb pots in a windowsill and I guarantee that if you do some senior gardening You will bee (bzzz) hooked! Or you might prefer to try Herb garden indoor. I plan on having mine all winter.
