Senior Citizens Scams
Senior citizens scams are on the rise with the economy in the sad shape it is in, today. We seniors just want to believe that no one would ever take advantage of us. We are just sweet old people who need a little help, now and then. But guess what? We are so wrong! We have to be on the constant look out for the next scheme that is being plotted, against us. Yes, plotted!

There are all kinds of people out there that want to trick us into believing they are someone they are not. They are trying to find a way to convince you that they are nice and there to help. Some senior citizens scams that are out there all start with a phone call. You know how we try to teach children how to say NO!! to drugs? Well we have to learn how to just HANG UP!
Illegal telemarketing is is a crime. The people doing it are criminals! You just need to remember that legitimate telemarketers don't pressure people into sending money right away! In stead they will bill you later. This gives you time to check with the better business bureau or company to authenticate the business. Giving money to a telemarketing company that is a scam, usually means losing it forever! Remember; "If it sounds too good to be true, it is"! "Hang up- Hang-up Hang-up Hang-up"
Another senior citizens scam is sweepstakes. Beware of a call or something in the mail that states, "You've Won!" a such and such. If these have anything to do with you sending money to redeem your prize, it is probably a scheme. Never ever fall for a Canadian Sweepstakes scam. They are on the rise. Remember, " If it's too good to be true...". Another scheme that is emerging is Publishers Clearing House with Email Prize. Don't click on it. Instead, go to their website or company out of your e-mail address and continue there.
Scammers keep finding new ways to trick you, every day. Spend a little time becoming aware of some of these, so everything you own doesn't end up in the $#&^$(you know where).
Watch out for someone claiming you owe money for something your deceased partner or relative ordered. These schemers read the obituaries and target seniors that are still morning. Sad but true. Call the police immediately, if you are a victim or suspect a senior citizens scam in the making. You may be embarrassed because they tricked you but it is important in order to stop it.
A senior citizens scam to watch out for and protect yourself from is medical equipment fraud. Review your insurance. If some one calls or comes to your door, don't give out personal information. Unsolicited medical supply salespeople usually target in this way.
Let's talk about Home repair. This is a big senior citizens scam that is reported, a lot. Some one knocks on your door and claims to be from the gas/electric company. One might claim to be from the water department, or even the cable company. Simply state they will have to return later and call the company. If it is not legitimate, call the police. Chimney cleaning, gutter repair, and tree trimmers are other scams. Most of these legitimate companies will send out fliers in advance and offer coupons and a phone number. Once again you can check it out in the phone book or call the better business bureau. Your best avenue for any and all repairs is to call one yourself and set up an appointment. Clear it with your family or friend before you make a final decision. Always get references from home repair workers. Try to avoid hiring out of town companies. The police can't track them as easily.
Avoid the scam where someone tells you they have left over materials. Never give "good faith" money and don't believe in those "good deals". Remember; "If it sounds too good to be true....".
Door-to-door sales, miracle cures, eye glasses, and hearing aids at bargain prices are no bargains at all, in the end. Ask yourself how they would even know you were old enough for these items. A few more senior citizens scams to be aware of are; check scams, charitable contributions, quick or pressured decisions, no-risk, high-yield investments, cash only deals, and a young person claiming to be a grandson or daughter in trouble and needs money. And my favorite, some one who gets mad when you don't comply! It is the tell-tell sign of all.
People are just not who they seem to be, any more. You have to be on your toes and scrutinize everything that affects your money. Every one seems to want to take it from you, now a days, and some don't care how they get it!
If you want to continue to live independently, you have to protect yourself. I still say a pet is a great bodyguard and an alarm system is too.
